Alan Partridge Presents The Cream Of British Comedy

Alan Partridge Presents The Cream Of British ComedySince their inception in 2000, Roger Daltry's week-long series of Teenage Cancer Trust fundraising gigs, held at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall, have become a landmark in the annual music calendar. 2004 saw the likes of The Stereophonics, Tom Jones, Jools Holland and of course, The Who, treading the boards in the name of this very worthy cause. But it isn't just about the music; one night each year is dedicated to British Comedy talent. '04 was hosted by failed TV Chat Show Host cum Regional Radio personality - Alan Partridge, and gets a welcome (if overdue) DVD release on 26th September.

Possessing the presenting prowess of a crack-fuelled Richard Madeley, Partridge links each of the acts with the trademark tactless ineptitude he is known and loved for. Fans of Steve Coogan's popular comic creation will recognise some of the material from the 1998 'Man Who Thinks He's It' tour, although there are plenty of new laughs, too; The show features a sketch with Simon Pegg as the original Milky Bar Kid, which places Alan firmly back in TV chat show territory, where he truly shines.

But this show isn't just about Alan. Some of the biggest names in Comedy join him onstage. The show features sets from the likes of Ricky Gervais, Rob Brydon and Noel Fielding, plus character comedy in the guise of Otis Lee Crenshaw and Little Britain. Although it's good to see these in a live setting, much of the comedy on offer has, since the event, appeared elsewhere in the subsequent series and tours of the artists involved. Maybe this can of comedy soup has been left on the shelf a little too long?

Despite this, the DVD is garnished with some tasty extras. These include an extended interview with Roger Daltry, which sees Alan sporting new facial hair and on form. Also included are the elusive VH1 ads, five 2 minute sketches used to promote the charity from around the time of the event, which have proved hard to track down in digital form until now. It is these additional features which will make this a worthwhile purchase for Partridge aficionados.
